When i wake…

i am not sure that i am a normal human being, maybe but i’m not sure. Just about every morning i wake up there is a song in my head. Without fail! Does anybody else have this happen to them? Often times the song is something i listened to the previous night or at some time the previous day but other times it’s just random, no explanation for the tune that is playing in the recesses of my brain. I have thought about incorporating this into my blog, entitled :: my morning play list or something a bit more clever. But who really cares about what song is playing in my head when i wake up? Probably not you.
But now you know.

But then there was today?

Today was weird because i kinda woke up at about 6:30am, that’s a solid 3 hours before my typical arrival time. But today when i woke up (kinda) i didn’t hear a song but instead i was dreaming. And for about 2 hours i was in a quasi sleep / dream state. The dream was like a very vivid movie that i had never seen. The people in the dream/movie were people i have never met and in situations that i have never been in.

This dream/movie kept playing until i finally had to wake up to write it down.
And i still can’t get it out of my head. It has thrust me into a contemplative stupor.

So now i have about four pages of dream written down. i’m sure it won’t go much further than that but who knows, maybe i have the next indie sensation on my hands.

Anybody want to help me make a movie!

Peace and Dreams

Playing for Change :: Very Cool Video

Here is a youtube video i ran across thanks to Len Sweet.
I hear a few people have watched, i hadn’t.
It’s awesome!

Check out the Playing for Change youtube page for more sweet videos!

Love it!

Che :: The Story of a Revolutionary

Well tonight I watched what ended up being about a 5 hours long movie (plus some change). The movie documented the life of Ernesto Che Guevara, Cuban & Bolivian / Latin American revolutionary.

Beside being a really long movie, probably the longest movie I have ever seen, and beside being kinda slow, it was really really good!

I have read a few books on the life of Che Guevara, most recently Death of a Revolutionary and this booked documented Che’s time in Bolivia as he tried to stir a Latin American revolution.

This movie, which was shown in two parts told the story, first of his Cuban revolution along side Fidle Castro. The second part of the movie document about the exact same thing as Death of a Revolutionary, his time in Bolivia.

The movie is currently playing at The Belcourt Theatre in Nashville. It you have a spare 5 hours ? I would recommend that you go see it.

I find myself really fascinated with the like of Ernesto Che Guevara and this movie gives a really solid picture of his time fighting for the revolution and some of the experiences he had along with the principles he lived and fought by.

I will post some more thoughts this week but for now… go see it for yourselves.

Peace :: the way to real Revolution

brain function…

I am remembering why i hated History of Christianity classes in college… it was because we would have these memorization term tests. We would have over TONS of terms on every test and then we would be quizzed (fill in the blank if i remember right) on random aspects of these terms. It was one of my least favorite classes in all of college. And my grade reflected that.

My brain just doesn’t function like that. I am not a memorizer. My method is oral and written engagement. I need to read something, write about about and / or have discussion. That’s how i learn. Memorization… my brain just doesn’t really function like that.

All that to say, the Cheesecake Factory is HELL right now. I am having to memorized not only the over 200 menu items but about 3-5 ingredients for every one of those items. *&%#!@#!$%^&(**^  (i know that’s a really long expletive but this training crap deserves it).

Life will be 1000% better in about a week when i have a decent grasp of the menu and am actually making money by serving tables. But for now, i have to study this stupid menu.

Shalom

Back to work / have me speak at your church PLEASE!

So yea, this post have 2 or 3 titles…

Back to work…
Waiting table, AGAIN!
Have me speak at your church, PLEASE!

I could probably think of a few more but those will do for now. But it’s true, the speaking ministry is REALLY slow these days, my wife and i are in a bit of debt, and we need to be able to pay our rent. All that equals yours truly waiting tables again!

:: My new job ::

So there ya go, i am back on the floor doing the serving thing. In all actuality i really like serving but it’s been awhile since i have done it and to be honest, i’m rusty! Last time i served tables i was living in Vail Colorado and worked at Paddy’s. A little local, laid back restaurant. It was good times and pretty good tips. The Cheesecake Factory IS NOT laid back but the tips should be excellent once i get on the floor. But for now i am learning a menu with over 200 items on it. CRAZY! i know.

So that will be my life for the next couple weeks. Should be interesting. i’ll keep you updated!

Peace & Cheesecake

A different worship experience…

Today my wife and i went to Brentwood Baptist Deaf Church. Andrea is actually writing a article on the church so we decided to go check it out.

It was pretty fascinating. How they worship, how things are set up, and how they diverse a group they had.

A couple things really struck out to me;

#1. The chapel they meet is extraordinary. I have only a bit of the story but i was told this is the only facility like that is built specifically for the hearing impaired. The floor is built so that during worship the congregation feels the music as much as they do anything.  Really cool experience.

#2. It struck me that many of the people in the service we hearing. It wasn’t an exclusively deaf crowd and there was an interpreter for us, people with hearing. It’s an interesting experience to know that people are making accommodations for you.

Most of all, the people were really friendly. I briefly met the paster and he seemed like a great guy with an incredible heart for the people that his ministry is reaching. I just thinks it’s amazing when people do what it take, become creative and innovative to reach people who need to know the gospel. And when people do that, not because the people they will reach are rich or will have a lot to offer but just because they sense the need, i think that is amazing. I think that to often these days ministry outreach is based on reaching people who will benefit you and your church rather than just meeting peoples needs and letting the rest fall into place. This just seemed like a really natural, organic ministry that was authentically meeting the needs of a people group that most churches aren’t really thinking about.

I would encourage you to check out Brentwood Deaf Church and if you can go visit and help them out any way you can. They are doing some great things.

Grace and peace

A new year and a new you, or at least a new me…

So, how many of you have made some new years resolutions?
One of the most popular new years resolutions is to get fit / loose some weight.
And this year that not only my resolution but it’s my plan!

P90X this is my plan!

I have know a few other would done this horribly intense workout program. A few guys in LA i know have done / are doing it. They definitely have seen some results but i didn’t really see them much BEFORE. But then i moved back to Nashville and guy i new in town did the P90X system and got ripped! When you see the results you get some extra motivation for sure! So i asked for the program for Christmas and my mom got it for me. And now we are on a journey!

The program consists of 12 DVD’s, a workout handbook,  and an intense diet plan. My wife and I are doing  the program together, altough she has been sick and also  has some back issues so for most of the time so far, i  have been on my own.
You work out 6 days a week, following one of the 12 DVD  each day. Each workout is about 60 min long, but Yoga  (which you do one day a week is 90 min.)

I am 11 days into the program and already seeing some  minor results!

My biggest victory was today! Yesterday i missed for the  first time. Usually once i miss my first day of a “routine” i  toss in the towel. Or say, “i’ll just start again next week”  or “next month” or “next year. But not this time, i once again was jumping around and lifting in front of my TV today. We are gonna do this thing!

My primary goal is to get under 200 LB’s (that pounds). i haven’t been there for a few years now and it’s about time i was!

My secondary goal is to be able to do 10 pull-up (that seems like a weak i know, BUT I AM WEAK!!!) I can do about 2 pull-ups todate, but i am pushing through and trying to get it done. In 90 days the plan is to be cranking em out!

My thirdary (???) goal is to be able to do 50 push-ups. I’m at about 27 (i think). So 50 should be to hard to get to.

And above all, the goal / plan / investment of it all is just to get healthy.

We are on our way!

Grace and peace & P90X!
Erik

PS :: come on back periodically and i will give you some updates. And i would love to chat about your goal, especially if they are fitness related!

Sunday readings…

Two of the scripture reading for today were extra thought provoking…

#1. Gen. 1:1-5

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

// If the darkness wasn’t good why didn’t God just get rid of it? Why did he only separate it?

Just a thought i had this morning.

#2. Mark 1:4-11

4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

// Father Thomas preached on this passage this morning. He mad a great observation. John baptism was a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin, correct. But if that was the case why did Jesus need to be baptized by John considering he was without sin?

Isn’t that a fascinating question. I thought it was. And Father Thomas made some great points as he preached this morning on this very question. You should go listen to his message, it was really good this morning. (it will probably be posted in the next do or so.)

SO, what do you think about those questions? Any ideas, observations, thoughts?

09 family goals…

Well this will be my first full year of marriage.
Andrea & i got married April 13th 2008 (we have amazing wedding pictures you can see here)
But this is the first full year so we decided to make some goals.

I thought i would share…

#1. Become Active in the communal life of our church.
(we just moved back to Nashville & started going to a church so we wanted to make it a goal to get really plugged into a community.)

#2. Develop an avenue of ministry in the city.
(this was my wife’s idea and think it’s awesome! We want to live out our faith!)

#3. Get our credit card debt below $XXX dollars.
(i wish there was only three digits to our debt but there is not. So we have a dream! i mean a goal of getting out of credit card debt. We want to be free!)

#4. 10 marriage enriching activities.
(We are not sure what these will be :: conferences, seminars, etc. But we know we need to keep our marriage fresh! Any ideas for these activities is welcome!)

#5. At least one 3-5 day adventure trip.
(money is pretty tight these days so we want it to be a goal that we get away at least once for a little adventure together. Can’t wait to accomplish this one!)

So there ya go. Our 09′ goals!
