[ to start off this post i need to say i bailed on the my last youth specialties / NYWC post. I got busy running around and whatnot and my last post kinda got buried! But Marko spoke and it was really good. I had a great weekend, maybe i will unload / debrief sometime this week. ]
But for now it’s thanksgiving and HULU!
Andrea and have come out to some friends lake house for thanksgiving. We got here on Tuesday and will leave either tonight or tomorrow. Just spending a lot of time watching TV, eating and playing on the computer. A great relaxing week with a beautiful lake view, love it!
And then their is HULU!
i have been hearing about hulu for awhile now. It’s kinda the equivalent of joost, which i tried really hard to get a beta invite to and when i finally did i realized i needed a newer mac for it to work. Blaaaa… so i gave up on the whole TV on my computer action other than the network website.
So i have 3 show that i watch on-line ::
#1. LOST
#2. Hero’s
#3. The Sarah Connor Chronicles. (but i am not religious about this one)
That’s about all i can handle since about 35% of the time it’s hard to watch, there are jumps in the action, all that fun stuff. BUT now there is HULU!
Like i said, i have been hearing about this for awhile but never really tried it out. But this weekend i have totally caught up on this current season of the Office on HULU! It’s been the best on-line view experience that i have ever had! The internet isn’t even that great out here at the lake and i have been able to watch the Office, full-screen with no glitches, it’s been great!
So you should check that out! hulu.com

We’ve been given some space just to reflect on what God has done for us at the conference.
That’s a different question for me. I’m not a youth pastor so I maybe have a little different perspective here. But for life has been a bit challenging as of late and just to be able to worship with 12,000 people is pretty powerful.
It’s in those weak times, those times where you don’t have word or the words you do have your not sure you believe. It’s in these times that your community sings for you, that the people of god say the words your not sure you believe on your behalf. That has been a very sweet thing for me this week. A little painful at times to be honest buy still sweet, like honey to the lips or something.
And just connecting with people I know well and some I don’t know really well, this has been my highlight.
Good stuff…
Marko is coming up!

[ i am going to start off with a side note :: i have noticed that there are a decent amount of errors in many of my post. GIVE ME A BREAK, i am posting from my iPhone! Thanks ]
So… day three was really good. for a few reasons.
#1. Got to hang with some great people.
Andy and i had lunch (there is pic of andy in the previous post)
Got to have coffee with Scott Kraemer, an old friend who is a new youth pastor!
Sat in the session and chatted a big w/Blake Brodien, another old friend!
Ran into MarkO, thanked for the free ticket and had a nice little chat!
Went out for coffee w/Steve Carter and a friend of his after the session. Haven’t really got to hang with Steve since the Isn’t She Beautiful conference at Mars Hill. Really good to connect with him.
So yea, it was a really solid day of connecting with some good folk!
THEN! I went my first seminar, which i mentioned in the previous post.
Toppic // The Dark Night of the Soul
It was REALLY good and exactly what i needed to hear. I talked with Mark afterwards and we decided the crisis is often the catalyst for the dark night. I’m there. Here are a few things he had to say…
// Mother Teresa says she spent 36 years in this place, the dark night of the soul.
She realized in experiencing the Dark Night she was experiencing the darkness of the cross.
She was participating in the cross of Christ!
// Some characteristics of the Dark Night…
:: This is not a tragedy :: Not darkness like evil or something bad :: It is the time when God goes silent :: When your prayers are dry :: there can be much pain during this time :: loneliness :: confused (how do i get got back) :: loss of words :: Old habits don’t satisfy :: You can’t seem to get rid of your faith during this time.
// In the Dark Night God is stretching us into new forms of knowing.
// He is dismantling our way of spirituality / our rule of life.
// Through the Dark Night God is trying to liberate us!
// God invites us into the Dark Night (but i am not sure we have a choice sometimes).
He gave us 3 sources to read, #1. Come be my light; Mother Tersa #2. Dark Night of the Sould; it’s a book, not sure the author. #3. John of the Cross; he coined the term and mark said he is REALLY hard to read. I’m in!
I waited in line to talk to mark afterwards, I HATE waiting in line to talk to people! But i did and we had a good chat. Mark is going to help me find a spiritual director in Nashville. Pretty stoked about that.
GOOD DAY!
(my favorite of the conference so far)
One day left, stay tuned.

Kinda skipped this morning and went to church with my wife. We are really starting to enjoy the church (church of the redeemer).
But now I’m back at the YS conference… Actually going to my first seminar. Mark Yakineli (once again, no clue how to spell that.)
He’s speaking on The Dark Night of the Soul.
I’m pretty stoked about it! I think I need to hear it. Tell you all about later.
(I’m sitting next to Andy :: he sexy :: “that’s what she said”. Oh snap!

Listening to Fransic Collins. He’s the head dude of the human genome project, a scientist, doctor, and really smart dude! He is saying alot of things that are like “what”! But he’s telling his story of faith and it’s really solid!
He’s showing a interview of him on the Steven Cobert show. Pretty fun!
He’s also quoting CS Lewis a lot. Solid.
I am now interested in reading his book.
He’s now talking about evolution :: (he just prefaced his word by “your not all gonna luke this.”)
Human cromazone 2 :: why we are different than chips.
(I didn’t get what he said. Yea)
“evolution is just the answer to how God did creation not why.”
Interesting.
He said a lot more.
What do you think about this guy.
I think I like him!
He’s ending by playing the guitar and singing a guitar. Yes the scientist!

Sitting here waiting for the session to begin. I’ve been pretty chill most of the day other than the main session.
I got into the arena like 5 min early tonight and it’s like dead but the seats are filling!
Matt Wertz us playing tonight to open things up. I had coffee with Matt this morning and he hasn’t been feeling well. Hopefullly he can get through his 30 min set. Should be good.
Here’s a pic of the arena filling up…
More to come….

Well I am bloggen from the YS National Youth Workers Convention this week Or at least I will try and blog form the NYWC. I trying to get on my wordpress app from the conference center but my phone what having some difficulties. We’ll try again tomorrow.
But yea, MarkO (Mark Oestreicher) gave me a free pass to come and check it out and hang out so I am there just hanging out! It’s pretty cool deal, they put on a great conference. And i am super thankful for the opportunity to be apart of it. I needed some time around some peoples just worshiping and soaking it all it. My soul needs it! It will probably need a bit more, even after the weekend!
So yea, i am going to try and do some blogging via my iPhone Wordpress app this weekend, if i can get it to work. But for tonight i will give you a little overview….
Francis Chan :: STUD! He was really really good. He embodies how i desire to live and preach. He is transparent and just preaching the scripture, not holding anything back. I so appreciate that! He is real! I am not sure you can say that for a ton of preachers. I hope to be able to say that about myself.
I actually ran into Francis after the session and chatten with him as he was walking to his room so that he could catch a flight. We just chit chatted, he was in the zone still i think. Not real talkative. But he did tell me Carlsbad (my previous home) is his favorite California city. Cool.
Anyway, love it! Very challenging!
Shane Claiborne :: Radical. i know he want to be addressed as a normal Christian or something like that… BUT HE”S NOT!!! And it’s a good thing! He’s also a stud with just some great thoughts on Kingdom living. i think he’s a prophet. Prophets were (and i might say still are) peculiar people who preached the CHALLENGING words of God. I think Shane is that for my generation!
The GAY guy :: he wasn’t actually gay but he spoke about the Gay community, the GLBT community. Said some really good stuff, quote Billy Grahm, “God judges, the Holy Spirit convicts, I love.” I say amen! We need to be having this dialog that teaches us how to love and reach gay community. He’s said some very positive things to further that dialog.
Tony Campolo :: Another prophet who just speaks truth (who is Jesus)! It’s like Jesus just comes out of that mans mouth and slaps you in the face. SO GOOD! He spoke about our 401K’s or now, as he said our 201k’s and how we need to learn to give away our life and our stuff, our security. really fresh to hear that from an older guy who isn’t some dred lock wearing, radical. (no offense shane). But yea, just solid.
He also talked about how this life of following Christ gets exponentially more difficult when you get married. AMEN! but maybe that’s not a bad thing. I don’t think it is! at all!!!
:: those are a few high lights from day one!
Shalom
