READS

August 7th, 2008

We (Todd & Erik) read a pretty good amount, especially Todd! We want to share some of the things we are reading that have to do with planting strong, Jesus following communities. Books and articles that will help facilitate this conversation.

So this is just a page of things we are into :: reading, watching, pondering… A page of inspiration.

Well i am reading a couple books right now that i think will be very formative in my idea of community planting. When i finish them i plan on giving some more substantial thoughts but for now i just thought i would put it out there that i am reading these books. I would love to know if you have read them and how they have helps your ideas of community & community planting.

Bruggemann’s The Prophtic Imagination reminds me A LOT of Rob Bell Words on the mosaic community of the old testament. I think Bell stole a lot of Bruggeman’s ideas. But it’s really good!

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, everybody knows this guy! And this book is a classic but i have never picked it up. So i thought it was about time and i am positive it will give me plenty to think about as i consider the concept of community planting.

Emerging Churches by Eddie Gibbs & Ryan Bolger

I never have quite figured out exactly what is meant by the “emergent movement” or what are the characteristics of an “emergent” church.  I am hoping this book will tell me, and I hoping it means more than lots of candles and potentially the use of incense in a worship service.

Why Christianity Must Change or Die by John Shelby Spong

In the month of September, my house church is doing a “Transformational Book Month” where each week we focus on a different book that has really impacted one of our group members.  The other books are The Shack by William Young, The Myth of a Christian Nation by Greg Boyd, and A Churchless Faith by Alan Jamieson.  The book by Spong is pretty radical.  I just read the first chapter, and he pretty much argues that the Apostle’s Creed is completely irrelevant to the modern church and should not be used.  I am curious to see if he ends up having some constructive things to say after his demolation work in the first few chapters.

I’m currently reading this book by Tim Keel entitled; Intuitive Leadership: Embracing a Paradigm of Narrative, Mataphor & Chaos. Tim is pastor of a community in Kansas City called Jacob’s Well. A great church with a great vision for reaching their neighborhood and their world. Tim tells a big chunk of his story as a church planter and i think this book will be an incredible conversation simulator as we continue to dream and talk.
